Disney have decided to make Merida an official Disney Princess and she’ll be getting her own range of Disney….stuff like all the other princesses. 

I was, of course, thrilled to discover this - finally, a strong, independent female character that had real worth and could be a decent role model for young children. However, Disney have opted for a re-design of Merida before she can join the ranks of Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and the rest. She’s now skinnier, sexier and more mature in appearance, trading in her bow and arrow for a sparkly dress (that looks pretty damn similar to the dress she openly detested wearing in the film).

Not only is this redesign totally unnecessary, it’s offensive and giving out completely the wrong message. Disney is further justifying body image anxieties in our culture, whilst also teaching women the best thing they can possibly achieve is to be attractive. 

Please sign the petition linked above, hopefully there’s still some time to save a very beloved character from having her personality stripped away.

Stuff like this wont happen to the ‘Shaw Princesses’ franchise, dont worry
